Lib Dems Consult on Plan for Enhanced Skate Boarding Provision in Surrey Heath

November 5, 2003 3:28 PM

A Working Party set up by Liberal Democrats in Surrey Heath has put out its preliminary conclusions for consultation with interested groups.

The Working Party has concluded that provision for skateboard and associated sports is poor in Surrey Heath, both in absolute terms as well as by comparison with other parts of the South East. It therefore proposes:

· The establishment of a central flagship Skate Park, at least comparable in size to Farnborough, in a central location. However, unlike Farnborough, this should be a managed facility charging an entrance fee.

· Upgraded facilities at Mytchett, and a new facility in Heatherside, such facilities to be open and subject only to informal management, as is currently the case at Mytchett.

· A new facility at Lightwater, with the preferred option being a partnership venture with the Lightwater Playing Fields Association

· Provision of portable facilities that can be used for both indoor and outdoor events

Convenor of the Working Party and Shadow Leisure Portfolio Holder, Cllr Alan Whittart, said: "Skateboarding is not a temporary fad. It is an activity that has a history of over 25 years. Skateboarding is widely recognised now as mainstream and most public authorities acknowledge the need to provide facilities in this area. Surrey Heath however is lacking both in skateboarding facilities, as well as other youth facilities. "

Cllr Bob Smith, Shadow Corporate Portfolio Holder with responsibility for Youth matters, said:" This consultation exercise is very important. It is essential for the community to be involved with the establishment, and ongoing management of the skateboard facilities. Users will be interested in the design of the facility, and any restrictions on its use. Parents will be concerned with the safety of the facility, and protection from anti-social behaviour that may develop around the facility. Residents will be keen to minimise the nuisance to themselves. All these are valid interests, and we should like to hear their views on our ideas."

The draft report can be accessed below. The consultation deadline is 30th November, and comments should be sent to camberley.skatepark@ntlworld.com
