Another Tory Tax Rise!

February 20, 2004 3:15 PM
Councillors John Faulkner, David Whitcroft and Duncan Clark - Cheque for £32 million

Lib Dem Councillors John Faulkner, David Whitcroft and Duncan Clark with 32 million reasons why Council Tax increases could be kept in line with inflation!

Councillor John Faulkner, Liberal Democrat Shadow Portfolio Holder for Resources reports on the latest Council Tax rise at Tory Surrey Heath Borough Council:

"On 18th February the Surrey Heath Borough Council Conservatives voted through an inflation busting 5.5% increase in Council Tax.

"This follows an increase of more than 15% last year and 17 % the year before that. With over £32 million in the bank account, this tax rise is not justified.

"Unbelievably this increase will not be delivering increased front line services to the general public, in fact, cuts to the popular Action Holiday scheme have been agreed.

"In contrast the Liberal Democrats put forward a completely costed alternative budget. The increase in Council Tax would have only been 2 % whilst at the same time providing additional funding for:

Skateboard initiative

Minor shopping areas support initiative

Crime & Disorder initiatives

Action Holidays

CCTV

Environmental Initiatives

Youth initiatives

"This program could be implemented by following a combination of sound financial management and making efficient use of the Council's existing assets."
