Rosalyn Harper, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Surrey Heath and her Lib Dem team, collected over 500 petition signatures in the first few hours of launching their campaign calling for the provision of CCTV facilities for the outlying parts of the Borough and they are continuing to flood in.
Ros Harper, Tony Cowell and Cllr Bob Smith collect signatures for the CCTV petition in Heatherside, Camberley
Rosalyn Harper said, "I was overwhelmed by the reception we received in Heatherside, Lightwater, Frimley and Bagshot. The majority of people were very supportive towards our campaign. They really felt let down by the Tory Council and couldn't understand why the Council hadn't given the installation of CCTV in their area a higher priority.
It was a great opportunity to listen to the residents and the owners/managers of businesses concerns in relation to the growing crime and anti-social behaviour. CCTV is not seen as a fix all solution but one way to reduce crime. Increasing the number of police on the streets, which is Lib Dem policy paid for by scrapping the ID Card scheme, and giving young people something to do in light of the lack of cinema and social/leisure facilities in the area which I feel is an aggravating factor and one which should be rectified."
We will continue to collect petitions during 2005 and intend to present them to Surrey Heath Borough Council in the near future.
Please keep an eye out for our Focus' and Tabloids which contain petition slips. They are available at a number of businesses in each of the shopping areas or can be obtained via this website.
Also, if you think your area needs CCTV and it is not mentioned above please let us know - those areas mentioned above were specifically turned down by the Tory run Borough Council.
