Surrey Heath Liberal Democrats have overwhelmingly backed Councillor Duncan Clark as their next Prospective Parliamentary Candidate (PPC). At a meeting of local party members on Monday 19th June, over two thirds of the votes cast went in Councillor Duncan Clark's favour.
Councillor Duncan Clark is currently Deputy Group Leader of the Liberal Democrat Council Group at Surrey Heath Borough Council. He has represented Bagshot on Surrey Heath Borough Council and Windlesham Parish Council since 1999.
Duncan joined the local party in 1987 at the age of 15, and has been an active campaigner for the Liberal Democrats in Surrey Heath ever since.
Commenting on his selection, Duncan said:
"I'm very proud the local party has put its faith in me. The next few years will be both exciting and challenging as we take the fight to the Conservatives across our constituency.
"The Liberal Democrats have an excellent opportunity of taking control of Surrey Heath Borough Council at the next local elections in May 2007.
"Together we will be campaigning harder than ever to get our message across to all residents. The message is quite clear - local people have been let down by the Conservatives.
"Conservative Surrey Heath Borough Council is officially the worst Council in Surrey according to the Audit Commission. It has also consistently imposed above inflation Council Tax increases while seeing its reserves wasted through poor financial management
"Conservative Guildford Borough Council (which covers Ash and Tongham) has angered residents by planning to spend £1.5million on a new 'shopping-mall' style reception for their offices in the middle of Guildford. While some small changes are needed to help access for the disabled, these would cost nothing like the £1,500,000 for this prestige project.
"Conservative Surrey County Council is presiding over cuts to front line services including the closure of youth centres and libraries, cutting bus services and reducing funding for the voluntary sector.
"Only the Liberal Democrats can be trusted to run our councils efficiently - this is the message I will be making loud and clear over the next few months".
