Denise Smith MBE, Lib Dem Candidate on July 28
The Conservatives held all three council seats that were being contested in the by-elections covering Ash, Ash Vale, Ash Green and Tongham on Friday, 28th July, 2006.
Denise and the team would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who helped in the by-elections in Ash, Ash Vale, Ash Green and Tongham on Friday. We were up against a very active and well-funded campaign from the local Conservatives and on the day they won the County, Borough and Parish seats.
We are proud of our candidate and the campaign we fought but the gap between the parties in that area was just too much to make up during the 5 week campaign. We made the Conservatives work for their seats on the Council and are confident that they will not be able to take the people of Ash and Tongham for granted in the future.
We will continue working hard in the Ash and Tongham area because we believe this area is neglected and deserves a stronger voice in Guildford - a voice that Liberal Democrats can provide.
The result was as follows:
Surrey County Council, Ash and Ash Vale Division Con 1547 (63.3%, +12.2%),
Denise Smith, LD 898 (36.7%, +3.5%), [Lab 0.0% -15.7%] Majority 649. Con
hold. Turnout 27.7%
Guildford Borough Council, Ash South & Tongham Ward Con 1245 (64.5%,
