Join the drummers to march against poverty
A coalition of activism groups in the Surrey Heath area is asking people to 'Step Out Against Poverty' on Saturday 14th October. They are inviting people to march from Frimley Parish Hall to Frimley Church of England School and then on to Frimhurst Family House to show solidarity with those who experience extreme poverty.
There will be speeches, readings, drummers, dancing and displays at each of the locations on the route. Young people aren't left out, there are opportunities for taking part in art, drumming and singing workshops. The focus of the art workshops is on Tapori which is a worldwide network of friendship between children. The Tapori campaign for 2006 involves children drawing a silhouette of themselves and decorating it in a way that expresses their vision for a better world. The silhouettes will be displayed in Geneva or at the UN Building in New York before being sent to other children in different countries.
The event is also taking place to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty which occurs annually on the 17th October. The Day, which is commemorated globally, seeks to promote increased awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and serves to remind all people that sustained and concerted effort is vital to achieve the millennium development goal (MDG) of halving the number of people living in poverty by 2015.
All are welcome to this fun event which starts from 12:30 at Frimley Parish Hall. Please bring drums, whistles etc. and a picnic. The march is approximately a mile and a half and the event concludes at 5pm.
